ARCHIVE.ORG Console Library: Atari 2600

Atari 2600 The Atari 2600 is a video game console released in September 1977 by Atari, Inc. It is credited with popularizing the use of microprocessor-based hardware and ROM cartridges containing game code, a format first used with the Fairchild Channel F, instead of having non-microprocessor dedicated hardware with all games built in. The console was originally sold as the Atari VCS, for Video Computer System. Following the release of the Atari 5200, in 1982, the VCS was renamed "Atari 2600", after the unit's Atari part number, CX2600. The 2600 was typically bundled with two joystick controllers, a conjoined pair of paddle controllers, and a cartridge game—initially Combat and later Pac-Man. The Atari 2600 was wildly successful, and during much of the 1980s, "Atari" was a synonym for this model in mainstream media and, by extension, for video games in general. The Atari 2600 was inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame at The Strong in Rochester, New York in 2007. In 2009, the Atari 2600 was named the second greatest video game console of all time by IGN, who cited its remarkable role as the console behind both the first video game boom and the video game crash of 1983, and called it "the console that our entire industry is built upon."

Be sure to read the JSMESS FAQ if you have questions about the in-browser emulator and the technology behind it.

The Atari 2600 is ironically somewhat difficult to emulate quickly, so a fast machine is a big help. It is also suggested you use the Firefox browser to run the emulator.

Here are the highest rated Atari 2600 cartridges in this collection: Frogger, River Raid, California Games, Chopper Command and Dragonfire. Please be aware that there were many not-excellent cartridges produced for the Atari 2600 and some of the games should be observed but moved on from pretty quickly.

Checkers follows the same rules as the board game that most of us grew up playing. For example, if you can jump you must, if a piece is jumped it is removed from gameplay, and so forth. You can choose to play against the computer at three different difficulty levels (novice, intermediate, or advanced), as well as against a human...

Use the robotic arm to trap the particles as they are released. If you manage to catch all of the particles before running out of time, you'll move up to the next level to deal with faster particles. You must complete nine levels to save the reactor.

The test pattern cartridge contains 15 displays that can be used to check or align most adjustments for a black and white or color television. One pattern is also included to check the alignment of the color generation circuitry on the Atari VCS™ console circuit board. A 1kHz and 3kHz tone can be selected with the DIFFICULTY SWITCHES, and the patterns can be selected by scrolling forward or backwards through the list via the GAME SELECT or GAME RESET console switches.

Environments were an arena with a river in the middle with two bridges, forests that the tanks can use for cover, and brick walls that could be shot through or used for cover. The tanks...

Rather than go through the expense of releasing Computer Chess as a bankswitched cart, Atari decided to strip it down (removing some of the graphical extras) so it could fit into a regular 4K cart.

Produced by 20th Century Fox, it wasn't an "official" Atari game, which, with the exception of the games made by Activision, pretty much ensured it would be awful -- and Crypts of Chaos was. Cubicolor was written by Rob Fulop while he was working Imagic, but the company refused to publish it. Nevertheless, he proceeded to sell it himself in a very limited amount of cartridges. He first sold these in the 80’s for $100 each, and then released the remainder in the mid-90’s when there was renewed interest. Most copies have a simple white label and are signed and numbered by Rob Fulop. It is unknown exactly how many copies exist, although it is believed to be less than 100....

Custer's Revenge is a controversial video game made for the Atari 2600 by Mystique, a company that produced a number of adult video game titles for the system. The player character is based on General George Armstrong Custer. The game was first released on October 13, 1982, and has received significant criticism because of its crude simulation of a rape of a Native American woman. In the game, the player controls the character of Custer, depicted as a man wearing nothing but a cavalry hat,...

In the solo game, players guide a laser gun along the bottom of the screen, firing upward at demons that are the same color as the gun. The dead demons eventually turn to diamonds (hence the cool title), which can be shot for additional points....

You, being the royal Desert Falcon (ancient Egyptians believed their rulers took the form of Horus, the falcon god) are on a quest for precious gems and hieroglyphics hidden in the desert. In a nutshell, the game is a ancient Egyptian version of Zaxxon with some interesting bells and whistles. Like Zaxxon , Desert Falcon is a diagonal-scrolling shoot’em up....

And, if you're lucky, when they all seem to come crashing down you'll be able to catch them. After this game doing the dinner dishes will seem like child's play.
